Accessibility statement

The WAVES consortium is committed to making this site usable by everyone, and is required to do so by Directive (EU) 2016/2102 on the accessibility of public sector websites.

Conformance status

This site is designed to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 at level AA, the standard referenced by the European harmonised standard EN 301 549. Conformance has been assessed by self-evaluation. Where a page falls short, it is listed below rather than omitted.

What has been done deliberately

Text is set in Trebuchet at a base size of 17 pixels with a line height of 1.65, and every colour pairing on the site was checked against the 4.5:1 contrast ratio for body text and 3:1 for large text. Every interactive element is reachable and operable by keyboard alone, and the focus indicator is a visible three-pixel outline rather than the browser default.

The map is not an image with data trapped inside it. Each place is a focusable element with an accessible name, and the same information appears underneath as a legend and, on the consortium and fieldwork pages, as a table. The animated hero draws a single static frame for anyone whose system asks for reduced motion, and stops entirely when it is off screen.

The site loads no third-party scripts, so no external widget can override the page's keyboard behaviour or contrast.

Known limitations

Documents published as PDF, such as the programme handbook and annexes, may not be fully tagged for screen readers. If you need any of them in an accessible format, ask and we will supply one.

The admissions portal is a separate system operated by a third party and is covered by its own accessibility statement.

Feedback

If you meet a barrier on this site, tell us what page you were on and what happened, and we will fix it or give you the content another way.

Preparation of this statement

This statement was prepared in August 2026 on the basis of a self-assessment carried out against WCAG 2.1 AA, and is reviewed annually or whenever the site changes materially
